For Artists

We believe artist film belongs in the cinema. Projections is our programme for artist filmmakers. From regular screenings and live events, new commissions to artist development opportunities, we work with artists to imagine the cinema of the future.

At the heart of the Tyneside Cinema’s Projections programme is a commitment to helping artists create bold new work, for screening or performance in the cinema itself. We do this to show just how versatile the cinema space is, and to explore the boundaries between film and art.

Each month we show artist films, host live events and present new commissions as part of our film programme.

We offer a range of opportunities for artists, both emerging and established, to create brand new films or performances that are designed for cinema spaces.

We are also interested in helping artists to develop, so we host a regular forum called The Rough Cut, where artists can show new work or work-in-progress and receive feedback from experts, peers and guest curators.

Read below for more detail or visit the Tyneside Cinema Projections website for a deep-dive into the programme’s past, present and future.

Open Call

Each year, six Tyneside Cinema Projections events are selected from open calls.

We have an open call twice a year, and we ask for proposals from curators and artists to present new moving image programmes or create live work for the cinema space.

We will open for submissions again in January 2020.

If you are thinking about applying, please read the guidelines and requirements on the Projections website by clicking here.

The Rough Cut is a free event for new work and work-in-progress by artists working with the moving image.

For artists, The Rough Cut a useful way to share and get feedback on new work in a supportive and unthreatening environment.

For everyone else, it’s a chance to see interesting new films.

To participate in the next Rough Cut event please send your film to Tess from our artist team at:

The Graduate Artist Residency at Tyneside Cinema is an opportunity for recent graduates from Northumbria University to create a brand-new moving image work.

Over a three-month period, the artist in residence is supported by curatorial, technical and academic staff Tyneside Cinema and Northumbria University.

During that time, they create a film or moving image piece to be screened at the cinema and tour the UK.

The 2019/20 artist in residence will be announced soon. In the meantime, you can watch the piece created by 2018/19 resident Georgia Bates on the Projections website.
