Learn & create

If you want to make film, then our learning programmes could be right for you. If you are already making film or artist film, then you might be interested in some of the development and commissioning projects our Projections team run.

Over the last three years we’ve welcomed over 15,000 children and young people to our historic art-deco cinema to learn more about film through activities, workshops and events.

Tyneside Cinema’s multi award-winning learning programme – the most distinctive and far reaching programme offered by any independent UK cinema – offers a wide range of high quality opportunities for 8-24 year olds to get involved in filmmaking and film watching. From one-day workshops to three-month courses, we’ve got something for everyone. We always offer a percentage of our programmes for free to engage young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may not otherwise have these opportunities.

We are proud that our professional digital video service – Northern Stars Production – is led by a new generation of talent emerging from our learning programme. The company are available to hire, offering a high quality, professional and reasonably priced service and have produced over 200 films for clients across the UK including The National Football Museum, The Society of Chief Librarians, intu Eldon Square,  Sage Gateshead and Maxïmo Park.

Our workshops engage students of all ages, explore curriculum links and develop understanding of a subject in a hands-on way, whilst having fun and building soft skills in a supportive learning environment. All the work produced during the day is yours to keep to support future lessons, contribute to coursework requirements or just use as a souvenir. Find out more >>
