Following a three-month residency with Tyneside Cinema, artist and recent Northumbria MFA graduate Siân Hutchings will present her new film Quietly Beneath with a live sound performance and Q&A.

Siân Hutchings’ film Quietly Beneath seeks to expand the aural boundaries of painting. Through choreographic interactions with gesso, the film begins to understand painting beyond a static work of art but rather as a live material with its own agency. The ingredients of gesso performed by the two dancers in the film become characters and we can begin to establish their relationship. Thinking of painting we often relish its visual allure, becoming consumed by colour and texture, our eyes sinking in. In comparison the Cinema has also been traditionally thought of as the place of watching. Engaging with the cinema as a space for listening, she considers painting for its voice, opening the cracks behind the seemingly mute surface.

A linked exhibition at Gallery North will open directly after the launch at the cinema: please join us for both events.
The Graduate Artist Residency is a partnership with Northumbria University and is supported by the NewBridge Project.
